Driving in Spain

In Spain, the law requires that all vehicles carry reflective vests and that they must be carried in the passenger area of the vehicle in order that in case of an emergency, they can be put on before even opening the door of the vehicle.

Beware - hire car companies are not required to include reflective vests in their vehicles and often do not.

  • All vehicles must also carry at least one warning triangle.
  • Spanish registered vehicles are required to carry two warning triangles.

Although foreign-registered vehicles are only required to carry one triangle, it is recommended that they carry two as local officials may still fine vehicles carrying only one.

  • The high-visibility garment must conform to EU standards EN 471 or EN 1150, in order to conform with European Directive 89/686/EEC
  • The triangle must conform to EU standards, evidence for which is the stamp E 27 R
